The Jersey Marys

Visit any of the modest New Jersey neighborhoods that sprang up in the post-WWII suburban migration and you will find a concentration of front yard shrines to the Virgin Mary. Though central to the culture of Catholicism, the prevalence of these devotional shrines has also made them part of the visual folk culture of New Jersey.

The photographs in this series employ an identical composition to highlight the individuality of the shrines. Most have weathered, and many have been repainted over the years. Often their caretakers have added items of personal significance.

Each Mary is unique, and each has her own story.

It’s in the details.
